Alternate Channels: The Uncensored Story of Gay and Lesbian Images on Radio and Television

by Steven Capsuto
abstract

Craig Loftin:

This is the history of gay and lesbian representations on television and the radio in America from 1930 to the present. Capsuto puts gay media images in the historical context of times, discussing topics such as McCarthyism, The rise of gay rights, and the spread of AIDS and rise of the New Right. Some examples of case studies considered in the book: postwar swishes on the radio, the Monkees limping their wrists, deadly lesbians on Police Woman, Billy Crystal on Soap, the kiss on L.A. Law, and the success of Will and Grace.
