Craig Loftin:
This groundbreaking 1982 novel for young adults is about two teenage girls who fall in love. Liza first meets Annie at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and knows right off the bat something is different. Liza and Annie become close friends but are terrified at the implications of their homosexuality. Liza soon begins to doubt her feelings seeing how her love for Annie hurts those around her. It is not until she is in college, away from Annie, that she is able to come to terms with her feelings.
This novel won numerous awards upon its publication, but became the subject of censorship controversy in 1993 when the Kansas School Superintendent ordered all copies removed from libraries after a fundamentalist minister publicly burned a copy.
