Between the Sheets: Sexual Diaries and Gay Men's Sex in the Era of AIDS

by Anthony P. M. Coxon
abstract

Joseph Hawkins:

The most extensive and up-to date account of gay men's sexual behavior, drawing together data from the innovative ‘sexual diaries' research conducted by Project SIGMA with some 1,000 men over seven years. Detailed analysis of sexual encounters and sex sessions documented by the diarists shed new light on received accounts of gay men's responses to the threat of AIDS.

All conceivable aspects of sex between men and of gay sexual lifestyles are graphically documented: topics include body image and the facts and fictions about penis size; types of gay men; use of drugs, toys, porn and videos in sex sessions; masturbation techniques, frequent and common fantasies; and the importance of role-play and orgasms in sexual encounters. An important chapter deals with public sex (cottaging and cruising) and power play (the leather and SM scenes).

The book concludes with far-reaching and insightful analysis of the prevalence of highest-risk behavior and the extent to which this is practiced by different individuals. Throughout the text the perspectives reflect the men themselves, with generous quotations from their diaries in addition to interpretative commentary graphics and figures.
