Craig Loftin:
This book is a celebration of lesbian love letters from the mid 19th century, when Boston marriages and intimate romantic friendships between women were commonplace, to the present age of the gays rights and feminist movements. Turner argues in an introductory essay that love letters hold a central place in the lesbian experience due to women's traditional delegation to the “private sphere.” The majority of the book is reprints of the letters themselves, some from famous women but the majority from more common women. The book is heavily illustrated with lesbian-themed collages created by Turner and Sheri Tornatore.
