Drag: A History of Female Impersonation in the Performing Arts

by Roger Baker, with Peter Burton and Richard Smith
abstract

Tora D. Smith

Ever wonder about the historical roots of Rupaul, Hinge or Divine? Ever wonder what happened to the British theatrical tradition of having men and young boys dress in drag in place of women? Ever wonder what these two issues have in common? Well, DRAG, a historical perspective by Roger Baker, can answer your questions.

DRAG explores the history and the contemporary impulses of the drag movement. Baker explores the whos, whats and wheres of the cross dressing arm of the gay movement with sections including The Rise and Fall of the Female Impersonator, Fantasies, Fairies and Follies, and the Rise and Rise of the Drag Queen. Baker also addresses the obvious link to gay identity, the presence of female impersonators in the theater of the West and the East, and drag's modern faces.
