This is a collection of over 100 historical documents considers the role of gender in American history from the end of the Victorian era to the present. The role of women in society, homosexuality, masculinity, and transgender issues are featured most prominently. The collection is arranged chronologically, with sections such as “Gender Industrialized,” “Varieties of New Women,” “Manhood and the Strenuous Life,” “Bread Lines and Gender Lines,” “The Unquiet Fifties,” “Gender as Protest,” and “Backlash.”
