This beautiful and well-illustrated book includes histories that reveal the origins and source of heterosexism as mandated by medical, juridical, and theological dogmas. The introductory essay, “A Freethinker's Primer of Male Love,” is a dance through gay history that celebrates and defends male love on from a secular humanist perspective. The companion essay, “Paradigms for Gay Liberation,” recounts ideas that have informed the gay rights or homophile movement. Lauritsen suggests that the movement has lost its bearings and suggests ways to get back on track.
The volume concludes with a selective, annotated bibliography that provides ample suggestions for continued reading.
