Sissyphobia: Gay Men and Effeminate Behavior

by Tim Bergling
abstract

Greg Knotts: Greg Knotts is a PhD candidate in Education, at the University of Southern California.

Sissyphobia explores the phenomenon of effeminate behavior in gay men. Bergling discusses straight men and 'straight-acting' gay men and their reasons for having negative feelings about flamboyant, effeminate men. Sissyphobia investigates those feelings of anger, disgust, and intolerance of effeminate behavior and attempts to deconstruct the notion of masculinity — and what exactly it means to be deemed a masculine man.
